He Leadeth Me
(Psalm 23)

Sometimes I rest ideas on the incubating coals in the back of my mind. When another idea comes along, I feel my mind linking one or more of the previous ideas with the current idea and a song is born. He Leadeth Me was like that.

The three concepts that came together were my study of groove at the time, my mood after hearing a song on the radio and a favorite Bible passage that I recite often, Psalm 23.

The first lines of the song are: "The Lord’s my shepherd; I have no needs", which paraphrases the first verse of Psalm 23. Though I have been a Christian since I was three years old, it wasn’t until 1997 that I was able to comprehend the concept of having no needs - which began when I switched from keeping the Sabbath on Sunday to keeping it from Friday night to Saturday night like Jesus did. Now when I have a desire, God fulfills it. I have no needs. I suddenly realized the depth of why God put keeping the Sabbath in the ten commandments. God takes care of everything. When King David wrote the Psalm, he of course was keeping the Sabbath too. The satisfaction that has resulted enables me now to feel what King David felt when he wrote that Psalm.
